Kamal Hassan is undoubtedly the best and most versatile actor that South Film industry has given to the Indian Cinema. Although he is mainly a Tamil film actor but has worked in a number of Hindi films and in other regional languages of India. #1 Mahanadi, 1993

Mahanadi is a Tamil-Language Indian drama directed by Santhana Bharathi. The film portrays some evils of the society like corruption and criminal practices like child trafficking by means of the life story of a humble village man. The story shows how the family property of the protagonist is ruined. Kamal Haasan got the Best Actor National Film Award for his role in Mahanadi.

This Mani Ratnam movie was a crime thriller released on Diwali of 1987. It was based on the real-life story of Bombay underworld don, Varadarajan Mudaliar. Kamal Hassan received the best actor National Film Award for playing the character of Velu Nayakan in the movie.


#3 The Chieftain’s Son, 1992

The Chieftain’s Son released in 1992 is the story of a foreign return son of a village chieftain. The protagonist played by Kamal Hassan, comes to his village to marry his beloved and discovers that his villagers are suffering due to his father’s stepbrother and his nephew. Hey Ram released in the year 2000 was written produced and directed by Kamal Hassan. This film was based on the India’s partition and the Murder of Mahatma Gandhi by Nathuram Godse.  This film was selected by India for submission to the Oscars but it was not nominated.

Moondaram Pirai, a 1982 release was a Tamil film in which a woman is shown to relapse to her childhood days as a result of a head injury in a fateful car accident. Kamal Hassan got Best Actor National Film Award for this movie. It was remade in Hindi as Sadma.

This movie is popularly known as Pushpak. It released in 1987. This is one of the Kamal Hassan movies that has received a lot of critical acclaim as a silent film based on the life of an unemployed young man.

Hindustani released in 1996 was based on the story of a veteran freedom fighter Senapathy played by Kamal Hassan. The film shows the protagonist’s anger against widespread corruption at every level of bureaucracy and his struggle to eradicate this social evil.
