You all have heard of this dialogue numerous times in our Bollywood movies. Our hero was usually given faansi or umra qaid or let go. The Indian Penal Code (IPC) was drafted in 1860 and over the years amendments have been made to the codes. While IPC is comprehensive and covers each and every heinous crime there are some weird laws in India that are just hilarious and we bet you may not even know exists!

#1 Beat drums when locusts attack!

Farmers for sure don’t want their crops to be attacked or infested. To protect farmers in Delhi an individual must beat drums and report to authorities when s/he grasshoppers attacking the crops. Failure to do will result in a fine of INR 50 to be paid by the individual. The law is mentioned in the East Punjab Agricultural Pests, Diseases and Noxious Weeds Act, 1949.

#2 Third Child Penalty

Like China, Kerala also has strict family planning policy. According to Kerala’s Women Code Bill 2011, a couple has to pay a fine of INR 10,000 if they have a third child.

#3 Different legal ages for drinking!

You may think the legal age for drinking is 18 years in India but you are mistaken! The legal age for drinking some states is 18, while 21 in West Bengal and 25 in Maharashtra. The legal age for voting is same across the states, though.

#4 Strong Teeth a Job Pre-requisite

If you took toothpaste ads for granted, then start taking them seriously. In Andhra Pradesh, an individual must have strong and good teeth to become/work as Motor Vehicle Inspector as per Indian Motor Vehicles Act, 1914.

#5 Report if you find more than 10 Rupees lying around!

Don’t put that bill in your pocket if you find it lying around. According to the Treasure Trove Act of 1878, any money or treasure you find lying around belongs to the Queen. It is illegal to not report it to the authority.

#6 It is illegal for more than 10 couples to dance together

It is illegal if more than 10 couples are seen dancing on the same stage. Legally their numbers can be reduced or the program can be totally stopped according to the Licensing and Controlling Places of Amusement (other than Cinemas), 1960.

#7 It is illegal to even to fly a kite without permission

While we are genuinely not aware of this and happily celebrate kite festivals on Makar Sankranti, a weird law exists in India which bars us to fly kites without permission. According to Indian Aircraft Act, 1934, you need a permit to fly a plane as well as a fly a kite.

#8 Prostitution isn’t illegal according to ITPA, 1986

In certain cities, you can visit a red light area without having to bother about any legal interference. But if you visit a pimp or try pimping yourself, you can be arrested.
