In India, everyday 400 people are killed in road accidents. Road safety is a challenge and traffic rules are taken fore granted by pedestrians and vehicle drivers. For example, skipping the yellow light or crossing the road and not using footover bridge.
To solve this crisis of road regulations, two women, Saumya Pandya Thakkar and Shakuntala Pandya, artists from Ahmedabad came up with an innovative way to redesign pedestrian or zebra crossing. The new crossing has been designed it in such a way that it resembles a blockade and hence draws the attention of the drivers, making them slow down. This type of zebra crossing should be widely used near accident prone areas and places like hospitals and schools.
Saumya Pandya Thakkar has so far has painted three such crossings on Ahmedabad-Mehsana highway. China already has implemented 3D pedestrian crossing and few other countries are delving into unique designs to cut down road accidents but will it be a success in India? Only time will tell.
