Movies are a part and parcel of our lives. It is one of the most common means, across ages, to keep oneself entertained. Be it Hollywood, Bollywood, Tollywood or any other movie industry, stories have always inspired stories. We eagerly wait for Bollywood remakes of Hollywood movies but most of the time we are disappointed. From Bang Bang to our very favorite Sholay, Bollywood has taken a lot of inspiration not just from Hollywood but from movies all over the world. Some touched our hearts while some just made us want to leave and run. Rarely do we speak of Hollywood movies inspired by Bollywood. Maybe because western culture seems to dominate other cultures most of the times. But that’s an illusion. Hollywood also has a list of remakes from Bollywood.
Yes, it is not always that Bollywood gets inspired from outside World. There have been times when Bollywood movies inspired Hollywood film makers. While Hollywood certainly inspired South-East Asian movies; here are 10 Hollywood movies inspired by Bollywood.
#1 Leap Year (2010) – Jab We Met (2007)
Leap Year, an Amy Adams movie, is about a girl who is heading out to meet her boyfriend and propose to him in the Irish ritual, where the woman proposes to her man on a leap year. But on the way she meets another man (Matthew Goode) who helps her complete the trip. It is an adventure starting from their difference in lifestyles, to the car ride, them pretending to be husband and wife for a night, then they even open up about their personal lives. He asks her what would be the last thing she would carry out if her house was on fire, she has a lot on her list. But he was very sure that he would carry along his mother’s ring which unfortunately was with his friend whom he loved once. By the end of the trip, they both fall in love but cannot express it to each other because she was going to propose to her boyfriend. But she goes back to propose him to marry him, and not her boyfriend (turned ex).
The story line is a little similar isn’t it? Yes, it is in the lines of the famous Bollywood movie, Jab We Met. In this movie, Geet (Kareena Kapoor) is a bubbly girl who meets Aditya (Shahid Kapoor), a heartbroken man, in the train. She happens to miss her train on searching for missing Aditya, which breaks her record of never missing one. He helps her get back home. The family members start to believe that they were lovers. One day, Geet escapes to meet her lover, Anshuman but he did not feel the same for her anymore. She goes missing and Aditya finds her to get her back home again. Ultimately, along the journey they fall in love with each other.
#2 Fear (1996) – Darr (1993)
Not just the name but even couple of scenes were copied directly. The violent love story inspired Hollywood to make a similar one but with a different story line. In Darr, Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) is a crazy stalker of Kiran (Juhi Chawla). But Kiran is going to marry Sunil (Sunny Deol). It is only at the end of the movie that Sunil and Kiran realize that Rahul is the stalker. Then Sunil kills Rahul to create a safe world for Kiran. In Fear, David has a dark childhood and so when he meets Nicole, he becomes obsessed about her. When Nicole’s father, Steven realizes the truth about David, he asks her to leave David. But instead David tries to kill Steven and forcefully win Nicole. But while David attacks Steven, Nicole stabs him on the back and then he is thrown off Nicole’s bedroom window by Steven. Ultimately causing David’s death. There are quite a few similarities between the two. For instance, the scene in which SRK carves Kiran’s name on his chest. David carves ‘Nicole 4 Eva’ on his chest.
#3 Just Go With It (2011) – Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya (2005)
Another clear instance which makes it to the list of ‘Hollywood movies inspired by Bollywood’ is- Just Go With It. This movie resembles the original movie a lot! In Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, Samir (Salman Khan) asks Naina (Sushmita Sen), his secretary to pretend to be his wife in front of his girlfriend, Sonia (Katrina Kaif). By the time Sonia realizes the truth, Samir falls in love with Naina, who already was in love with him. The Hindi version was inspired by an old classic which was again inspired by a French movie.
