Game of Thrones and Harry Potter are, by popular opinion, two of the best and most watched series. What would happen if two of our most loved fictional series collided? Haven’t you ever wondered what the Sorting Hat would have done if faced with your favorite Game of Thrones character? Each Hogwarts House has some select qualities and the people sorted under those houses uphold almost all those qualities. All across Westeros, you will find people who would fit into Hogwarts Houses. Have you ever look at Jon Snow and thought he should be in Gryffindor? Or Tyrion Lannister would make a perfect Ravenclaw? Yes, so have we! Let us take a closer look at the Game of Thrones characters and sort them into Hogwarts Houses. Beware of the spoilers ahead folks.
Gryffindors are known for their bravery and boldness of character. Sometimes they can be hard-headed. They tend to act first and think later, although they always have the good at heart. They are very daring and can take the first step. They have leader-like qualities. For example, Harry Potter himself is a very brave and has a lot of nerve. But he is hard-headed and doesn’t always think about the consequences. As the Sorting Hat said in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone –
“You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart”
1. Jon Snow
He is perfectly fit to be sorted into Gryffindor. He is brave and will never deter from what he thinks is right. He will fight till the very last moment to prove his point. Sometimes he displays determination in a very reckless and unwise manner. Which is also a true mark of Gryffindors. Like, his reckless dealing with Mance Rayder and impulsive actions in “Beyond the Wall” (s07e06). It would be a piece of cake for the Sorting Hat to put him in Gryffindor House.
2. Daenerys Targaryen
Yes, our favorite Dany will also find herself in Griffyndor House. She too displays almost all the qualities of being a true Gryffindor. She is a born leader and cannot stand injustice. Her raid of Astapor and building her army of the Unsullied show the traits of being a leader. Her ambitions could very well sort her into Slytherin but she doesn’t want to conquer Westeros by any means possible. She wants to go the right way and prove herself every step of the way. What wins our hearts is her caring, motherly nature and her intolerance for the bad unjust people.
3. Catelyn Stark
She is also one of our most favorite characters and we love her. But she too has the attitude of acting first and thinking later. She has displayed it too many times throughout the series. Her kidnapping of Tyrion was as reckless as it comes. Her going to King’s Landing and leaving Winterfell, without thinking about the consequences properly is another mark of being a Gryffindor.
Hufflepuffs are known to be loyal, hard-working and patient. They are just and fair, and will stand by you no matter what, if you are their friend. Having a Hufflepuff as your friend will be very useful in your hour of need. They reward hard work and loyalty is their key feature. Remember Nymphadora Tonks? She was a brave Hufflepuff who gave her life during the Battle of Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. According to the Sorting Hat,
“You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true,
And unafraid of toil“
4. Ned Stark
Yes, this could be possibly controversial. But his loyalty and just frame of mind would probably sort him into Hufflepuff. He sees nothing beyond justice and it is ironic that his life ended on such an unjust note. He left Winterfell, against the behest of his wife, because of his sworn allegiance to King Robert Baratheon. He stood by his judgement of Queen Cersei and her illegitimate children born out of incest. He did not deter from his words even when he knew he would die. He went to the very core of understanding the situation, including finding Gendry, the next true heir to the throne.
After she was liberated from Astapor, as a gift to Daenerys, she had pledged her life to her. She is one of the most faithful, honest and loyal characters in the whole of GoT. She knows how to protect her Queen. She gives her all the right advice specially when Dany is out of her wits. She is loyal not only to Dany, but to Grey Worm too. Knowing he is an Unsullied and will never be able to consummate a relationship, she still loves him. Belonging to the island of Naath, Missandei would have proven to be a true Hufflepuff in Hogwarts.
Ravenclaws are famous for being witty and very knowledgeable. They are intelligent people and know how to get out of messy situations. Hermione Granger would be a perfect Ravenclaw, as admitted by the Sorting Hat too. But she chose to be in Gryffindor where she could flourish further. Professor Sybill Trelawney teaches Divination and belongs to Ravenclaw House. She is the one who prophesied the birth of the one who would have the powers to “vanquish the Dark Lord”. Luna Lovegood is another Ravenclaw and was in Dumbledore’s Army, fought bravely against the Death Eaters. They are all very brave and intelligent, let us see which GoT character is fit to be in Ravenclaw House. According to the Sorting Hat,
“Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you’ve a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind.“
6. Tyrion Lannister
Even though he is “the lion”, he is too witty to be in Gryffindor. He would flourish the best in Ravenclaw House. His sharp mind, logical comebacks and next level intelligence have manifested on many occasions. He is not the most loved character just like that. We love him because of his Ravenclaw-like qualities. As he said to Jon Snow – “My brother has his sword, King Robert has his warhammer and I have my mind…
7. Bran Stark
Bran is solely dependent on his mind for survival. After he lost the ability to walk, he became a warg and that is when he learnt how to use his mind in the right way. Now that he is the three-eyed raven, he is so full of knowledge. He is probably the only person in the whole of Westeros who knows everything about everything. He would have proved to be a great Ravenclaw because of his sharp mind. He uses his knowledge to bring the downfall of Littlefinger. He was the first one to know about Jon Snow’s lineage. Many mysteries were solved using his knowledge.
8. Lord Varys
Famously known as the “spider”, Lord Varys is the most resourceful of them all. He gets to know about the happenings across Westeros through his “little birds”. He is another knowledgeable man and a very strong ally. He is not known for fighting on the battlefield, but battles have been won using his strategies. He is Tyrion’s friend and has helped him escape from King’s Landing after he killed Tywin Lannister. He is a very intelligent person and knows exactly how to make or break a person.
Slytherins are known for their resourcefulness, determination, ambition, cunning and self-preservation. It is wrong to perceive that all Slytherins are bad people, they are simply not. They are very ambitious, and are ready to make ends meet at any cost. They do not like fraternizing much. Our favorite Professor Snape belonged to House Slytherin and was one of the most bravest people. He lived and died trying to protect others, specifically Harry. Slytherins are known to do great things, they are the most powerful of wizards. The Sorting Hat was confused where to put Harry because he will do great things in his future, much like the Dark Lord himself. There some select Game of Thrones characters whom we can sort as Slytherins. The Sorting Hat said –
“Or perhaps in Slytherin,
You’ll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means,
To achieve their ends.“
9. Tywin Lannister
He has one of the strongest minds in the whole of Westeros. He is brilliant at making strategies, albeit horrible and gory ones. None of us can forget the “Red Wedding” where Roose Bolton had made a secret allegiance to Tywin Lannister and killed his foes under his roof. There are so many instances where we have seen the brilliance of Lord Tywin. He is strictly against fraternizing and could not believe, till his last breath, that his children were having an incestuous relationship. For him, family is above all and he can start wars to protect his family.
10. Margaery Tyrell
“I don’t want to be a queen, I want to be the Queen” is Margaery’s statement from Season 2. This line says it all about why she should be a Slytherin. Her ambition is her driving force and she is ready to do absolutely anything to make ends meet. She was married to Renly Baratheon, a homosexual man, then to Geoffrey Baratheon, a monster and finally to Tommen Baratheon, who was so much younger to her. She is ready to sleep her way through to the top. She doesn’t care about the consequences, her ambitions are too powerful and that is what makes her a true Slytherin. She was determined to be the Queen, which she did become till Cersei literally, blew her up.
11. Cersei Lannister
She is the most bad-ass character in the whole of Westeros. She is resourceful, cunning and the best when it comes to self-preservation. For her, he family is everything. And by family, she only understand her three children – Geoffrey, Myrcella and Tommen. She is ready to do anything and everything to protect them. It is too polite to say that she is a power-hungry person. She yearns for all the power in the world. She doesn’t believe in defeating her enemies, she wants to annihilate them from the face of the earth. She is the only character who could do the “walk of shame” because she is the only one who has the ability to take full revenge, which she did. She is a true Slytherin in every sense of the term.
