Visit Khan Market anytime after 7 PM and you will notice the place bumbling with people. Most of them are like me. Finding that perfect nook to chillout with friends or have that memorable date.
The latest entrant is Civil House. The restaurant is situated right across Mamagoto. The first floor has a boutique that has been opened by the folks of the restaurant, the second floor has indoor seating for the restaurant and the terrace has the outdoor seating. I went for dinner around 8 PM and by then the boutique was closed.
The restaurant is small but the interiors and decors draw you. The decor is minimalist and has that vintage feel to it. The upholstery will transport you to a tiny bed and breakfast or a tea house in Europe. The smartest move made by Suvbha Chopra (the owner of Civil House) was dividing the eating area in two sections. If you are a music lover and want to hear live band then you can grab the table on one side and if you want to dine and chat then you can grab the table on the other side.
The food was great and piping hot. Civil House serves European and Continental cuisines so I would like to warn in advance that the place is not for heat lovers. If you are planning a memorable first date or soiree with your girls then this place is for you. And to take the tension off, here is the menu I would suggest you to order.
Civil House does not serve alcohol. All the drinks are non-alcoholic. You could choose either a mocktail or milkshake or both.
Nutella and Hazelnut Milkshake is one of the best milkshakes I have tried. I could be a little biased because I love both Nutella and Hazelnut. The sweetness was perfect and after every sip you’ll go mmmm… If you are allergic to nuts then I will recommend you to go for either Watermelon and Ginger Fresca or Hot Toddy.
Hot Toddy is a warm non-alcoholic drink and cleans your palette. In order to avoid confusing your taste buds, after every portion you finish, have a sip of this delightful drink.
Don’t just directly jump to main course. Civil House appetizers are light and the portion is perfect.
St. Johns Toast
If you are a non-vegetarian, then give this dish a try. John’s Toast is a combination of French Toast and Spicy Chicken – sweet and spicy flavor. The flavors of the dish do not override each other and are perfectly balanced.
Watermelon and Feta Stack
If you are a vegetarian, then this is the appetizer I would recommend you to order. Most Feta salads I have had over power the vegetables and fruits. Not in this dish. The sweetness of watermelon combined with saltiness of balsamic dressing and feta cheese made the dish refreshing and light.
The main course has something for everyone. Whether you are a burger lover or pizza or pasta; you will not be disappointed. Taking inspiration from Continental cuisine, the place also serves omelette, poached egg and sunny side up. Two dishes that completely stood out were Spaghetti in traditional minced lamb sauce and Zucchini, Mushroom and Chickpea Stew. The latter is vegetarian.
You can not leave this place without treating yourself to Vanilla Panna Cotta, orange and pink pepper Gastrique. Panna Cotta is a traditional Italian dessert that is easy and simple to make but one mistake and you’ll ruin this flavorful dish. Panna Cotta at Civil House is light, the sweetness is perfect and the dish will just melt in your mouth.
