This movie came in 2011 and was a box office success. Rajkummar Rao’s first movie was Love, Sex aur Dokha but this was the movie that got him noticed. Rao played a role of a boy named Uday who takes his girlfriend to a secluded house to spend weekend. Uday has some hidden intentions but his plan is foiled when strange events begin to take place at house. As Uday, Rajkummar made us dislike him because of his bad intentions and a boy trying to dominate his girlfriend.
Directed by Hansal Mehta, Aligarh is based on a real-life story of Professor Ramchandra Siras. Manoj Bajpayee played the role of Professor Ramchandra Siras and Rajkummar played the role of a journalist, Deepu Sebastian. The movie revolves around Professor Siras who is suspended by Aligarh Muslim University on the basis of gross misconduct. Deepu helps professor take his case to the court. The court rules in favor of Professor Siras but he dies before he is able to re-join.
How far can human emotions go and what all humans can possibly do when unimaginable situations hit them? Rajkummar Rao portrayed a character of a simple guy who gets trapped in a high rise apartment and his world turns upside down after that. The main theme of the movie is isolation. Even though the character lives in a busy city and has friends; his disappearance is noticed by none of his friends. The movie got Rao Filmfare Award for Critics Best Actor.
Another movie directed by Hansal Mehta, citylights is story of Deepak and Rakhi. Deepak, a poor farmer who owns a garment shop, from Rajasthan moves to Mumbai with his wife and daughter. At various stages, Deepak and Rakhi are taken advantage of but they do not loose hope. In the end, Mumbai’s ruthlessness consumes Deepak but he is able to save his wife and daughter.
Shahid is a biopic based on the life of lawyer and human activist, Shahid Azmi. The role of Shahid Azmi was played by Rajkummar Rao. This is one of Rajukummar Rao movies that got him the National Film Award for Best Actor. Azmi became a criminal at young age and was put in Tihar when he was 15 years old. After getting released, he resumed his education and became a lawyer. He primarily fought cases for people who were wrongly accused under the POTA. The movie ends with Azmi getting assassinated.
#6 Kai Po Che!
Based on Chetan Bhagat’s book, Kai Po Che! was a movie based on 3 friends. Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput, Govind (Rajkummar Rao) and Omi (Amit Sadh). The trio open a sports shop together but drift apart because of communal tension. The backdrop of the movie is set against 2001 Gujarat Earthquake and Godhra training burning incident.
#7 Bareilly Ki Barfi
Rajkummar Rao played the role of Vidrohi. A saree salesman settled in Lucknow, he is brought back to Bareilly by his friends, Chirag and Munna. Bitti (Kriti Sanon) runs away from home after getting rejected by a suitor. On train station she reads a book bareilly ki barfi and returns home to with a mission to meet the author. The original author of the book, Chirag, who also runs a publishing house, decides to hide the fact that he is the real author. The movie saw Rajkummar don two avatars that were poles apart. This one of the best Rajkummar Rao movies to watch.
Newly appointed and enthusiastic clerk, Newton (played by Rajkummar Rao) is determined to conduct fair elections in the area disturbed by Naxals. The bigger challenge for Newton is to educate the villagers what the elections is about and why their vote counts. He is able to convince the townsmen to come and vote but the situation becomes worse when one of the voters gets confused with the voting machine. Will Newton be successful?
#9 Fanne Khan
Fanne Khan is Rajkummar Rao’s upcoming movie which also stars Anil Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. A comedy movie, the film deals with the subject of body shaming. The movie is all set to release on June 18, 2018.
Another upcoming movie of Rajkummar Rao, Omerta is a movie about a British terrorist, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh. Omar was responsible for kidnappings of Westerners in Indian in 1994 and plotting of murder of Wall Street journalist, Daniel Pearl. The official date of the movie is yet to be announced.
