Our world has been blessed with people who have influenced and impacted lives throughout their life. These people need to be celebrated, their stories need to be narrated to everyone so that their lives continue to inspire us. Previously writers wrote about their lives, in the form of biographies. But do all of us read books? Probably not! So to narrate these extraordinary tales of heroism, the film industry introduced a unique concept of biography movies also called as biopics. Biopic movies are basically motion films with an element of drama, all along narrating the story of a famous person, usually someone who has impacted the society in a certain way.

As we enter into 2018, here is a list of the best biopics to watch out for this year.

#1 Sanju

This biopic is touted as one of the most awaited biography movies of the year. The movie is based on the controversial life of actor Sanjay Dutt. Ranbir Kapoor will be portraying the lead role with actor Paresh Rawal as Sunil Dutt. Manisha Koirala will be essaying the role of Nargis, Dia Mirza will be seen as Manyata Dutt and the role of Tina Munim will be played by Sonam Kapoor. Apart from these actors we will also see Karishma Tanna and Anushka Sharma in the biopic along with Tabu playing herself in a cameo role. The movie has been directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra who have together given us blockbusters like 3 Idiots. The screenplay has been jointly written by Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi. The biographical drama was supposed to release during Christmas along with Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer – Tiger Zinda Hai but the movie was later pushed to March 30, 2018, giving both the films a solo release on the respective dates.

#2 Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi

This is one of those biography movies which narrates the story of the heroes of our freedom struggle. The biopic narrates the tale of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi who fought against the British East India Company during the Revolution of 1857. The biopic stars three time National Award winning actress, Kangana Ranaut as the titular character. It also has Jishu, Sonu Sood, Atul Kulkarni and Ankita Lokhande in other major roles. The biopic is directed by National Award winning director Krish. The screenplay is written by K.V. Vijayendra Prasad who has also written the screenplay for Baahubali and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The songs are written by Prasoon Joshi. Helmed by so many National Award winners, this biography movie is slated to release on April 27, 2018. As movies with a patriotic charm usually strike a chord amongst the masses, we can surely hope that this will be one of the best biography movies and will surely do well at the box office.

#3 Soorma

This biopic is based on the life of the hockey player Sandeep Singh. Diljit Dosanjh plays the protagonist in the biography movie and it is directed by Shaad Ali. The biopic narrates the struggle of this legendary hockey player who was confined to the wheelchair for 2 years due to an accidental gunshot wound in 2006. In 2009 he made an amazing comeback by leading the Indian hockey team to victory in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. Apart from Diljit Dosanjh, this biopic also stars Tapsee Pannu. The movie will tentatively release on 29th June 2018. The film’s tagline, “The Greatest Comeback Story Of The Hockey Legend Sandeep Singh”, raises our expectations and makes this one of those biography movies which is a must watch for everyone.

#4 The Catcher Was A Spy

The upcoming biopic, slated to release in the US on 19th January 2018, is a spy thriller. It is based on a book by the same name written by Nicholas Dawidoff. The biography movie narrates the tale of Moe Berg, a former baseball player who joined the World War II war effort and spied for the US government. He was trained and sent to prevent German scientist Werner Heisenberg from building an atomic bomb for the Nazis. The movie has been directed by Ben Lewin and the screenplay is by Robert Rodat. It stars Paul Rudd as Moe Berg along with Guy Pearce, Jeff Daniels, Paul Giamatti and Sienna Miller. The film was supposed to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2017 but was pulled out as the post production couldn’t be completed on time. The film will be premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

#5 First Man

We all swooned over Ryan Gosling and his charms in ‘The Notebook’. Looks like this time he is actually going to take us to the moon in his new movie First Man. This is a biography movie on the life of Neil Armstrong-the first man to step on the moon. The movie will only cover the years from 1961-1969 when Armstrong and his crew prepared themselves for the Apollo 11 mission. The biopic will be directed by Damien Chazelle who has also directed La La Land and Whiplash. The screenplay for the movie has been written by Oscar winning director Josh Singer. The movie is slated to release on 12th October 2018. With all the bigwigs associated with this movie, First Man, is surely one of the biography movies we all are waiting for.

#6 Mary, Queen of Scots

Based on the tragic life of Mary Stuart, the Queen of France, this historical drama stars Saoirse Ronan in the lead role. The movie traces the relationship between the Mary and her sister Elizabeth I, both being strong and powerful women, willing to do anything to take over the throne. Margot Robbie plays the role of Queen Elizabeth I. The screenplay of the biopic is written by Beau Willimon and is directed by Josie Rourke. The movie has been adapted from the John Guy’s book, ‘My Heart Is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots’. The film also stars David Tennat, Jack Lowden, Martin Compston, Joe Alwyn, Brendan Coyle and Guy Pearce in other major roles. This biography movie is scheduled to be released on November 2, 2018.

#7 The Accidental Prime Minister

The movie is a biographical drama about the life of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and is based on a book of the same name written by Sanjaya Baru. The biopic features veteran actor Anupam Kher as the lead and is directed by Vijay Gutte, The screenplay of the biography movie has been written by Hansal Mehta and the music is by the iconc duo, Salim – Sulaiman. The initial release data of the movie in India is 21st December 2018. On June 8, 2017, the former Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani, asked the filmmakers to obtain a no-objection certificate from the former Prime Minister and the Indian National Congress President Rahul Gandhi. The first look of the film was recently released and sure enough, Anupam Kher does look convincing enough as Dr. Manmohan Singh with the trademark blue turban , beard and glasses.
