6 IPL Controversies That Still Haunt Us

The Indian Premier League has played host to some amazing cricket matches and performances since it’s inception in 2008 but it has also seen it’s fair share of controversies and scandals. With the Indian Premier League’s 2017 edition (IPL 10) right around the corner we take a look at the IPL’s top 6 controversies.

#6 Luke Pomersback arrest in 2013

The fact that this one is at number 6 goes to show just how scandal-ridden the IPL has been. In 2013 which was the year of controversies for the IPL, Luke Pomersback then a player for Bangalore was arrested for allegedly molesting a US woman and beating up her fiancé. The case was settled later out of court.

#5 Shahrukh Khan’s brawl at the Wankhede Stadium

Just two days before the Pomersbach incident Shahrukh Khan was allegedly involved in fight with Wankhede’s security staff and was reported to have used foul language.Following this allegation the MCA(Mumbai Cricket Association) banned him from entering that stadium for five years,the ban is still in effect.

#4 Rave Party scandal

In 2012 Rahul Sharma and Wayne Parnell players of the Pune Warriors team were arrested at a rave party in Mumbai and reports say they had tested positive for drugs. They were eventually dismissed by the police but the damage to the franchise’s image was done.

#3 Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth slapgate

In the inaugural season of the IPL the famous slapgate incident took place where Harbhajan Singh had allegedly slapped Indian Cricket team colleague S Sreesanth after a match between KXIP and Mumbai Indians. No footage of the slap was ever released and Sreesanth had also later stated that he was elbowed and not slapped but this remains one of the most talked about controversies in the IPL.

#2 Dismissal of Lalit Modi

The name behind the very inception of the IPL was ousted by the BCCI after being charged with rigging bidding, offering bribes and money laundering. He was also reportedly connected with the financial irregularities of the Kochi Tuskers franchise which eventually led to the dissolution of the Kochi team.

#1 The 2013 IPL spot fixing scandal

The revelation started with the arrests of bookies in New Delhi but when names like Vindu Dara Singh started coming into the limelight things started looking bad for the IPL. Three Rajasthan Royals cricketers S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were arrested which led to ban of the Royals franchise. Even N Srinivasan’s son in law (CSK owner) was involved in the fixings and as result he had to step down from his BCCI post. This was the worst scandal to have hit the IPL.
