Grammy Awards

The biggest night of the year for music is fast approaching – The Grammy Awards! It’s that time of year again where faults crack between friends regarding which of their favourite artists is going to win this year, and who has the best performance! The 58th Grammy Awards, set to happen for the first time ever on a Monday, goes live on 15th February 2016 (but will air in India on February 16th, 2016). With a lot of public favourites nominated for the awards, here are my predictions for the winners of the seven main categories: Record of The Year, Album of The Year, Song of The Year and Best New Artist, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance.

#1 Record of the Year

D’Angelo and the Vanguard – “Really Love

Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars – “Uptown Funk

Ed Sheeran – “Thinking Out Loud

Taylor Swift – “Blank Space

The Weeknd – “Can’t Feel My Face

My Prediction: Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars – “Uptown Funk

This song made to every DJ’s playlist and every person’s dance playlist. Even Michelle Obama danced to this song! With the music video having over 1 Billion views on YouTube, Uptown Funk has truly proven to be the most popular song of the year.

Close Second: Taylor Swift – “Blank Space

#2 Album of The Year

Alabama Shakes – Sound and Color

Kendrick Lamar – To Pimp a Butterfly

Chris Stapleton – Traveller

Taylor Swift – 1989

The Weeknd – Beauty Behind the Madness

My Prediction: Taylor Swift – “1989”

Taylor Swift’s transition from Country to full-blown Pop music resulted in this remarkable album called 1989. With songs like “Shake it Off”, “Blank Space”, “Style” and “Bad Blood” that busted charts left right and center, 1989 is definitely indicative of Swift’s progressive career and popularity.

Close Second: Kendrick Lamar – “To Pimp a Butterfly”

#3 Song of The Year

Kendrick Lamar – “Alright”

Taylor Swift – “Blank Space”

Little Big Town – “Girl Crush”

Wiz Kahifa feat. Charlie Puth – “See You Again”

Ed Sheeran – “Thinking Out Loud”

My Prediction: Taylor Swift – “Blank Space”

With record breaking sales and positive critical reception, Taylor Swift became the first woman to beat herself for the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in history. Taylor Swift takes a jab at the media’s portrayal of her in this satirical song which has brilliant lyrics like “Darling, I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream.”

Close second: Wiz Khalifa feat. Charlie Puth – “See You Again”

#4 Best New Artist

Courtney Barnett

James Bay

Sam Hunt

Tori Kelly

Meghan Trainor

My Prediction: Meghan Trainor

The “All About That Bass” singer has a high chance of winning this year, owing to both popularity and critical acclaim. Already having swept away several New Artist awards at other ceremonies, Trainor seems like she won’t leave without ticking the Grammy box.

Close second: Sam Hunt

#5 Best Pop Duo/Group Performance

Florence + The Machine – “Ship to Wreck”

Maroon 5 – “Sugar”

Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars – “Uptown Funk”

Taylor Swift feat. Kendrick Lamar – “Bad Blood”

Wiz Khalifa feat. Charlie Puth – “See You Again”

My Prediction: Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars – “Uptown Funk”

As earlier mentioned, Uptown Funk was probably the most popular song of the year. Owing to that, and the fact that the single made record sales and received critical acclaim for its “funky” sound, Uptown Funk seems to be the forerunner for the Best Pop Group/Duo Performance.

Close Second: Wiz Khalifa feat. Charlie Puth – “See You Again”

#6 Best Pop Vocal Album

Kelly Clarkson – Piece by Piece

Florence + The Machine – How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful

Mark Ronson – Uptown Special

Taylor Swift – 1989

James Taylor – Before This World

My Prediction: Taylor Swift – 1989

I really do think this is going to be Taylor Swift’s next multiple-Grammy year! 1989 has full potential to win both Album of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album, with several of its songs popular among the masses. Also, don’t you think the (hypothetical) Album of The Year undoubtedly win this category too?

Close Second: Mark Ronson – Uptown Special

#7 Best Pop Solo Performance

Kelly Clarkson – “Heartbeat Song”

Ellie Goulding – “Love Me Like You Do”

Ed Sheeran – “Thinking Out Loud”

Taylor Swift – “Blank Space”

The Weeknd – “Can’t Feel My Face”

My Prediction: Ed Sheeran – “Thinking Out Loud”

Well, it’s not fair to predict that Swift will win everything, now, is it? The British ginger artist’s single has enough acclaim and popularity to earn him his first Grammy award. If Thinking Out Loud does win, it would be a happy surprise!

Close Second: Taylor Swift – “Blank Space”
