9 Quick and Easy Delicious Left Over Idli Recipes

Idlis are loved by all of us and can be had as any course of the meal. But what about when you are left over with idlis? We all have spruced our idlis with onion and tomatoes but these 7 dishes will add zing to your leftover idlis. The best part is they take less than 15 minutes to make and can help curb those mid-night hunger pangs.

#9 Idli Fry/Idli Tawa recipe

A scrumptious variation to consume all leftover Idlis! This dish is good for kids as an after-school snack or school lunch box. Idli fry is a healthy and tasty snack that can be prepared within a very short time of only 10 minutes. Follow the instructions given below or watch video:


  • 5-6 Leftover Idlis – cut into 4 pieces
  • 1 Medium-Size Onion – Chopped
  • 1/2 Tomato – Chopped
  • Salt (as per taste)
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp Chilli Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
  • Curry Leaves (karri patta) – 5-7 leaves


If you want to make idli fry then shallow fry your idlis and keep them aside. To make idli fry or tawa idli proceed to next the next step.

In a pan, heat about 1 tbsp oil, and add mustard seeds and curry leaves. When the seeds begin to splutter add onion. Stir the onion till they turn translucent. Now add tomato and keep stirring till the time tomato do not soften. Add the spices (except lemon juice) and also add about 2 tbsp of water. Mix everything well and put the idlis in the pan. Now add lemon juice and again mix the ingredients well. Garnish the dish with coriander leaves and green onion. Serve hot with ketchup and mint chutney.

#8 Idli Pizza

Idli pizza is a yummy and fast snack and my personal favorite. Prepare this dish as an appetizer for your kid’s birthday party or any party. This dish could also be served as an evening snack with your tea.


  • Leftover rice idlis
  • Cheese Cubes
  • 1/2 tsp Oregano
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • 1/4 tsp Chilli Flakes
  • Ketchup
  • Butter
  • Yellow, Green and Red Peppers – diced
  • 1 medium onion – diced
  • 1/2 carrot – diced


Shred your cheese cubes and keep them aside. In a bowl, mix vegetables, salt, pepper and oregano.

You could either slice the idli from the middle or you can take whole idli. Spread butter on one side of the idli. Now spread ketchup. Top your idlis with vegetable mix. Sprinkle some cheese, oregano and chilli flakes. Bake your idlis in oven. If you don’t have an oven then in a skillet, heat oil. Gently put idlis in the pan. Flip the idlis after few 1-2 minutes. Your idli pizza is ready. Serve hot with ketchup.

#7 Chilli Idli

Chilli Idli recipe is an amazing lunch box formula for kids and adults! This desi-chinese recipe will soon become everyone’s favorite in your house. The recipe is extremely simple to follow and will take you less than 10 minutes.


  • Leftover Idlis – 5 to 7
  • 1 medium size onion – chopped
  • 1 medium green pepper – chopped
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1/2 tsp minced ginger
  • 3-4 Green Onion – chopped
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp red chilli sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • A pinch of Asafoetida powder (hing powder)
  • Salt (as per taste)


Chop your idlis into 4 pieces and pan fry them. Keep the idlis aside.

In a bowl, mix ketchup, red chilli sauce, soy sauce and vinegar together. In another bowl add 1 tbsp water to cornstarch for a consistent paste. Make sure there are no lumps.

In a pan, heat oil and add asafoetida, garlic, ginger and green onions. Saute green onions and add onions and green pepper to the pan. Saute vegetables for 2-3 minutes. Now add your soy sauce paste to the pan. Add salt as per your taste. Mix the ingredients well and add idlis. Pour cornstarch paste to bind everything together. Serve hot with sweet-chilli sauce.

#6 Idli Manchurian

Another Indo-Chinese dish, Idli Manchurian is a perfect dish satisfy your hunger pangs. The dish is little bit more complicated than the previous one. You could either follow written instructions or watch the video.


  • 5-6 Idlis – cut into four
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp minced ginger
  • 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 medium sized onion – chopped
  • 1 medium sized green pepper – chopped
  • Salt to taste

For Batter

  • 1/2 Cup Maida (All-Purpose Flour)
  • 1/3 Cup Cornflour
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp kashmiri chilli powder
  • Water


In a bowl, combine all the batter ingredients except water. Begin adding water and mixing till the time you get a non-lumpy smooth better. Dip the idli in the batter. In a pan, heat oil and deep dry idlis. Keep aside idlis.

Take a skillet and heat oil. Add minced ginger and garlic. When the garlic turns slightly brown, add onions and green peppers. Saute the vegetables. After 2-3 minutes, the onions will turn translucent, add salt, soy sauce, vinegar and tomato ketchup. If you prefer spicy, then you may also add 1/2 tbsp red or green chilli sauce. Mix well. Finally put idlis in the pan and give a good stir. Garnish with green onions.

#5 Idli Pakore

Now it’s time to give our idlis a Mexican twist. There are many recipes on the Web that will teach you how to make Idli Pakore but I found this recipe unique. This recipe is filling and tastes yummylicious.


Idlis – 5-7 pieces

For Filling

  • 1 medium size onion
  • 1 medium size green pepper
  • 1/4 cup boiled corn
  • 2 tbsp oregano
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1-2 Cheese cubes
  • 100 gms Paneer

For Batter

  • 1 cup Gram flour
  • 1/3 cup rice flour
  • 1 tsp kashmiri red chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp Garam masala
  • A pinch of asafoetida powder
  • Salt to taste


In a food processor, chop onions, green pepper and corn. In a pat, heat oil and the chopped vegetables. Saute the vegetables. Add paneer to the mix and keep sauteing. Now add salt, oregano and black pepper to the mix. Grate the cheese cubes and put it in the pan. When the cheese begins to melt, bind the ingredients together. Keep the filling aside.

In a pan, add all the batter ingredients. Keep mixing water to the dry ingredients till you get a smooth batter.

Slide the idli from the center and leave one end closed (see the video). Fill the idlis with filling and dip it in the batter. In a kadhai, heat oil and deep fry your idlis. Your Mexican Idli Pakore/Fritters are ready. Serve hot with tomato ketchup and salsa.

#4 Idli Upma

Idli Upma is a very easy and tasty dish prepared from leftover Idlis. You can prepare idli upma with fresh idlis as well. This recipe is a perfect breakfast idea.


  • 3-4 Idlis – crumbled (mash idlis with your fingers)
  • 1 medium chopped onion
  • 1 chopped carrot
  • Curry leaves – 5-7
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1 tsp chana dal
  • 2 tbsp peanut
  • 1-2 tbsp grated coconut
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste


Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, urad dal and chana dal. When the seeds splutter, add peanuts. Stir peanuts till the time they don’t get roasted. Now add vegetables to the pan and saute. After 2-3 minutes, the onion will turn translucent. Put 1 tbsp water with turmeric powder and salt. Mix well. Add idlis and mix the ingredients together. Finally add coconut. Turn off flame after 30 seconds. Your idli upma is ready. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

#3 Idli Bhurji

A perfect breakfast recipe, idli bhurji is delicious and filling. We are sure this dish will keep you fill till lunch time. The recipe is easy to make.


  • 3-4 Idlis – crumbled (mash idlis with your fingers)
  • 1 medium sized onion
  • 1-2 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 5-7 curry leaves (optional)
  • 2 eggs
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder


Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. When the seeds begin to splutter, add onion and curry leaves. Saute onions till the time onions don’t turn translucent. Now either whisk the eggs or break the eggs directly into the pan. Mix the ingredients well. Now add salt to taste, chilli powder and idlis. Your idli bhurji is ready.

#2 Idli Chaat

Forget regular chaat or bhel puri and serve this lip-smacking idli chaat at your next recipe. The recipe for idli chaat is similar to papdi chat.


  • Cut 3-4 idlis in bite-size cubes
  • 1 medium size chopped onion
  • 1 medium size chopped tomato
  • 1 tbsp mint chutney
  • 1 tbsp meethi chutney
  • 1 tsp chaat masala
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • Handful chopped coriander
  • Handful sev
  • 2-3 tbsp curd/yogurt


Churn the curd and add salt, chilli powder and chaat masala. Keep aside curd. In a pan, shallow fry idlis. Drain the excess oil by placing idlis on a paper napkin.

Now take a serving plate and arrange idlis. Arrange onions and tomatoes on top of the idlis. Pour over the yogurt. Put mint and meethi chutney on top of it. Sprinkle sev, coriander, salt and chaat masala. Your idli chaat is ready!

#1 Idli Tikka

Another perfect recipe for your next house party, idli tikka can be made with fresh idlis or leftover idlis. The preferred idli is mini idli for this recipe. This recipe can be made with an air fryer or on tawa.


  • 10-20 Mini Idlis or Cut regular idlis in half
  • 1 medium size cube onion
  • 1 medium size cube green pepper
  • 2 tbsp yogurt
  • 1/2 tbsp gram flour
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tbsp oil


In a bowl, mix yogurt, gram flour, salt, chilli powder, turmeric powder and oil well. Add onion, green pepper and idli in the batter. Keep the mix aside for 15-20 minutes for idlis to marinate. Now in a skillet, heat oil. Place the marinated idlis in the skillet. When ready, place them in a skewer and serve with mint chutney.
