10 Unforgettable Ajay Devgan Movies

Ajay Devgan (or Ajay Devgnn) started his film career in the year 1991 with his debut film Phool Aur Kaante which was a super hit. Since then the actor has won best actor awards, national film awards and Padma Shri in 2016. While we anxiously wait for Shivaay this Diwali, let’s take trip down the memory lane and recall some of his best movies.

#1 Phool Aur Kante (1991)

Phool Aur Kaante was the debut film of Ajay Devgan opposite south actress Madhu. It was a full on Bollywood masala film and there was not much new in terms of story. However, the brilliant performances by the leading pair and melodious music made this movie a superhit.

#2 Jigar (1992)

Ajay Devgan’s next movie opposite actress Karisma Kapoor, Jigar was also a blockbuster in 1992. The story was about Raju who learns martial arts to avenge his sister’s rape by a wrestler. This movie inspired by Hollywood blockbuster of 1988, Kickboxer and was directed by Faroque Siddiqui.

#3 Dilwale (1994)

Dilwale released in 1994 was a love triangle starring Ajay Devgan, Suniel Shetty and Raveena Tandon in the lead roles. It was directed by Harry Baweja and became the biggest hit of all time earning more than 68 crores at the box office worldwide. The music of the film also became very popular.

#4 Jaan (1996)

Jaan starring Ajay Devgan, Twinkle Khanna and Shakti Kapoor was also a superhit of the year 1996. It was directed by Raj Kanwar.

#5 Ishq (1997)

Ishq released in 1997 was a multistarrer directed by Indra Kumar. It had Aamir Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Kajol along with Ajay Devgan. By that time Ishq was the most expensive film ever made in Bollywood and became an all time blockbuster earning around 300 million at the box office. It was a story of two best friends who due to some misunderstanding created by their parents start hating each other and Ajay Devgan plays the role of one of the friends very convincingly. The film was remade in Kannada in 2007.

#6 Zakhm (1998)

Zakhm directed by Mahesh Bhatt is one of the best movies acted in by Ajay Devgan as it won him the Best Actor National Film Award for the first time. Even Ajay himself counts his role in Zakhm as the best of his career. Pooja Bhatt who played the role of Devgn’s mother won audience’s hearts.

#7 Kachche Dhaage (1999)

Kachhe Dhaage was yet another milestone of Ajay Devgan’s career. The story revolved around the life of a smuggler who smuggles across the border. It was directed by Milan Luthria and is said to have a loose resemblance to Hollywood movie Armour of God.

#8 Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999)

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam had Ajay Devgan in a supporting role but he made it absolutely memorable for the audience. Vanraj (Ajay Devgan) marries Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) but finds out his wife loves someone. He takes it upon his duty to get the two lovers together.

#9 Company (2002)

Company released in 2002, was a movie based on the underworld of Mumbai and directed by Ram Gopal Varma.

#10 The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002)

The Legend of Bhagat Singh was perhaps the first period film done by Ajay Devgan and in this also he left a strong impression of his acting prowess. The get-up of freedom fighter and martyr Bhagat Singh suited best on Ajay Devgan and adorned by his unmatched acting it made this movie the best among the number of biopics made on Bhagat Singh at that time. Ajay won the National Film Awards for best actor and Filmfare Critics Award for this role.

#11 Drishyam

Drishyam is about Vijay Salgaonkar who lives with his family in Goa. He runs a cable TV service and is a television fanatic. When his wife and daughter kill Goa’s police commissioner’s son, Vijay decides take matter in his hands. The police and everyone takes him for granted since he is not well educated but when he outwits the entire force; it will make you question are textbook education really makes us literate?
