10 Athletes to Watch Out for At Rio Olympics

It is official. Rio Olympics has commenced and we all are excited. With 206 nations participating and more than 11,000 athletes competing, the game is going to be interesting. India has its own share of immensely talented athletes who have chance of winning medals. HookedUpon is wishing all the athletes best of luck.

There are few athletes that have us excited to watch at this year’s Olympics:

#10 Leander Paes

Sport: Tennis

Leander Paes is undoubtedly one of the most popular and successful athletes of the country .He won the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 1996. His mixed doubles win at the 2010 Wimbledon made him the second man to win Wimbledon titles in three decades. He will pair up with Rohan Bopanna to Open India’s tennis campaign in the Rio Olympics.

#9 Narsingh Pancham Yadav

Sport: Wrestling

Narsingh Yadav is an immensely talented young Wrestling athlete who beat the odds to win a gold at the 2010 Commonwealth games and has numerous other achievements and medals to his name.
The wrestler failed to impress in the 2012 London Olympics when he lost out and got eliminated in his first bout against Matt Gentry of Canada, therefore he might feel he has unfinished business to settle.

#8 Dipa Karmakar

Sport: Gymnastics

This 22 year old from Tripura became the first woman gymnast to qualify for the Olympics when she booked her berth for the Rio Olympics. She is one of the five women in the world to have completed the toughest vault in artistic gymnastics. So one can expect a good performance from this lively and talented gymnast.

#7 Rohan Bopanna

Sport: Tennis

Rohan Bopanna is currently ranked 15th in men’s doubles and is one of the brightest stars of Asia’s tennis scene. He has partnered with Mahesh Bhupathi and Aisam Qureshi and has won many tournaments in the men’s doubles category. This year he will partner Sania Mirza in the mixed doubles and Leander Paes in the men’s doubles and is arguably one of India’s best medal prospects this year.

Sport: Tennis

She is one of the most popular and talented tennis players the subcontinent has seen for a long time. She will compete in women’s doubles and mixed doubles in this year’s Olympics and look to make the country proud again like she has time and again.

#5 Deepika Kumari

Sport: Archery

Going into 2012’s London Olympics Deepika Kumari was ranked as the world number one that too at the age of 18. This is a testament to her talent and even though her 2012 campaign didn’t go as well as she would have liked, for this year’s edition she has the required experience and would be competing at both.

#4 Yogeshwar Dutt

Sport: Wrestling

He won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics and he’s back to compete in the 65kg category this time. He has undergone a lot of training and is under a new fitness regime and diet to keep his fitness levels at the very top level and is all geared up for this year’s Olympics.

#3 Jitu Rai

Sport: Shooting

Jitu Rai is participating in the 50m pistol and 10m air pistol events in Rio. He is the reigning 50m air pistol champion at the ISSF World Cup. He is currently ranked third in the world in both his categories. The 29-year-old shooter has won two gold, three silver and one bronze medals in these events and also a gold in Commonwealth and Asian Games.

#2 Saina Nehwal

Sport: Badminton

She is one of those Indian athletes who has been on fire in terms of form and achievements in the past 5 years. She won a bronze at the 2012 Olympics and is currently ranked fifth in the world. She recently won the Australia Open Super series and has been very consistent in her performances. If she manages to keep up the good form and energy level she might just bring home yet another medal.

#1 Abhinav Bindra

Sport: Shooting

He made history in 2008 Olympics when he became the first Indian ever to win an individual Olympic gold medal and this would be his last shot at repeating history. In order to prepare for this year’s edition he had an exact replica of the Rio shooting range built at Chandigarh. Now that’s the level of dedication that brings success.
